Into the Light 1.4: Campaign Diary

The players awoke in the Ubiquitous Wayfarer for the last time, and arranged to meet Mazatl later that evening. By now, all three heroes were thoroughly sick of the Lower Ward, its pollution, and its lawlessness. Trekking across to the Lady’s Ward to find a pony cab home, the party heard a cry from a side street. Wherever the cry had come from, it was obscured by a cloud of unnatural fog, but it sounded like Jason Scott!

The party rushed in, with Ragados using his armour to magically double in size. Fumbling through the thick mist, spellcasting was almost impossible. But 12-Bar was able to charm the Wind Duke with Hypnotic Pattern, and the fog dispersed. The barghests were taken down, and Jason Scott was saved from death, despite his near-suicidal determination to fight. M’narr tried to handcuff the charmed Ivth, but Ivth teleported away in thunderous explosion. The party gave chase and took the perp down. 12-Bar was keen to loot the body, but first Jason Scott had to be persuaded to leave. The knight was firmly against stealing or taking evidence, even if he did owe the heroes his life, but he was convinced to go and get help. The party started to feel like maybe the boy scout wasn’t so bad after all. Meanwhile M’narr couldn’t steal from the unconscious Ivth, and Ragados couldn’t take evidence that belonged to the Harmonium. So 12-Bar took it, and then gave it to M’narr, with the blessing of Ragados, the nearest Harmonium officer. All legal and above board. Ivth was taken to prison. The players also oddly enjoyed having the D&D equivalent of a cop in the party while talking to the police. They enjoyed the mutual respect.

So on to the party’s meeting with Mazatl. Mazatl had a few questions for the heroes, and cast a few doubts on their conclusions, but paid them well all the same. The players grew suspicious of Mazatl but they all rolled badly on their insight checks, so none of them will ever know the truth. They spent the rest of the night celebrating and drinking in the Clerk’s Ward. By the time they headed home, they were too euphoric to notice a sole figure following them in the shadows. Luckily, none of them had overindulged. And they were going to need all the luck they could get if they were to survive their imminent attempt on their lives...
