Old Ghosts: Campaign Diary
M’narr had been broken out of the Gatehouse – though only just. Teaming up with Jerryx Woodswatcher, Truetemper’s Solution’s new accountant, Ragados and 12-Bar staged a daring break-in through Sigil’s catacombs. During the escape, the Athar’s Ullitharid ally on the inside had hit M’narr with a feeblemind, and Jerryx nearly fell fatally foul of a wild magic surge. The breakout ended with final showdown against Berith Mormo, who met his end face-down in sewage. Alas, the adventure was not without some loss: Mercy learned of the jailbreak, and found it irreconcilable with her Mercykiller beliefs. She left a letter of resignation, and gave a promise of her silence. Jerryx would now be working for Truetemper’s Solution permanently.
Some weeks passed, and the chant in Sigil around the Gatehouse died down. When the Harmonium came knocking to question the party, Ragados chose party allegiance over Faction, and the choice had messed him up a bit. He and M’narr had both taken to the bub to deal with their problems.
So it was not a moment too soon that the party received a letter from Veridis Mov asking for help back in Crux. The party left that very morning :
“Jerryx, we’re going planewalking, you alright to watch the shop? Could be gone a few weeks.”
“Well, I er, I mean-“
“Nice one. See you.” With that, the party headed to the portal in Maven’s Meats in the Market Ward. An irritable Maven yelled the dark of the key at the party just to get rid of them. The key, the memory of a dead loved one, was conjured by Ragados, who learned in that moment that his parents had passed away. Through the portal’s light, Ranais awaited. The party’s journey through the cold dead world was almost identical to the last, their fitful march interrupted by a wraith ambush; but before long, they had made it back to Yggdrasil.
The party’s welcome in Crux, its leaves burnished in the reds of deep autumn, was frosty. Veridis provided a warm welcome however, offering food and news before getting to business. Their meeting was interrupted by the visit of Sterkaad the Saved, one of the Dewcollectors, along with his teenage ward. Sterkaad raved about a monster attack and forced himself into Veridis’ house. Then things got weird. Vines sprouted out of the ground and started to attack; fire engulfed the building; and hundreds of cats attacked. During this chaos the party slowly twigged that illusory magic was at play. In the moments where the illusion lapsed, Sterkaad, his ward, and Ragados could be seen attacking the party! M’narr snapped Ragados out of it, and Veridis helped the party dispatch their two assailants, who turned out to be the same breed of fiend that had infiltrated the town guard.
Once the illusory dust settled, Veridis shed some more light on things. The creatures that attacked Crux – visages, Veridis called them – had returned, despite losing the Battle of High Point, and were getting desperate. The entire cohort was meeting in a few days’ time. Veridis was asking the party to stamp them out entirely. In return for risking their lives, he offered a fortune. More money than Truetemper’s Solution had ever had before. How could they say no?
